Muskingum County in southeastern Ohio harbors some of the best wild turkey habitat in the state. Back in the late 1930s and early 1940s this was largely strip-mining country. The ODOW took control of many abandoned mines in the late 1950s, and wildlife management work has been ongoing since that time. Turkey management strategies have created some prime turkey habitat that includes reverting fields and woodlots.
There are plenty of food sources within this area to ensure a healthy turkey population. The hunting pressure during the spring turkey season is moderate. Hunters willing to walk a little farther, do a little more scouting and spend a little more time in the woods finding roosting and strutting areas should have a great chance at success.
